642年から始まる清教徒革命を率いたクロムウェル(1599-1658)の歌。
国王チャールズ一世は処刑され、クロムウェルはインフルエンザで死亡している。
その後王政は復活され、埋葬されていたクロムウェルは墓を暴かれ絞首刑の後斬首されてウェストミンスター・ホールの屋根に２５年間掲げられたという。
歌の中の頭の上にりんごの木が生えたのは首がなかったからとも考えられる。
またお婆ちゃんがコツンとやられてのは首が落ちたようにも受け取られる。
マザー・グースの歌のように意味のない歌のようだ。
最後の鞍と馬の口に当てる革紐のくだりがわからない。
